Ibutamoren: a growth hormone secretagogue
Ibutamoren is a growth hormone secretagogue.
It is also known as MK-677, the name it was given by Merck laboratories when first tested in 1998.
More precisely, it is a non-peptide spiro-piperidine, agonist of the ghrelin receptor.
Ghrelin is the hunger hormone, and Ibutamoren will enhance ghrelin activity in the stomach.
That is the first benefit if you are trying to build muscle: it increases your appetite.
Second benefit: when you increase ghrelin’s activity, it triggers the release of growth hormone.
Unlike peptides, this trigger doesn’t happen only once. It happens every 2 hours over a 24-hour period, with only one Ibutamoren dose.
Important to note:
- It is not an androgenic anabolic steroid
- It is not a SARM
- It is not a peptide
Assuming that you: eat enough, sleep enough, have normal hormone levels, you should be building enough muscle.
Unless we forgot one cornerstone of muscle building: IGF-1, which is produced by the liver from growth hormone.
IGF-1’s anabolic effects are little known, but of critical importance:
- Maintaining a positive nitrogen balance (increased protein synthesis)
- Maintaining lean muscle mass on a caloric deficit (eat less and keep muscle mass)
- Collagen synthesis (tissue regeneration after heavy lifts)
IGF-1 levels are extremely hard to maximize naturally through only diet and exercise.
Taking in enough amino acids and getting enough sleep will only get you so far. Your only chance of pushing it to high levels is either through rHGH injections, or MK-677 supplementation.
You don’t even have to sleep, train or eat optimally: Ibutamoren will push your pituitary gland to secrete growth hormone during 24 hours at a sustained rate.
The results are:
- Increased IGF-1
- Increased collagen production
- More protein synthesis
- More fat burnt
- Faster recovery from workouts. You can easily hit the gym everyday with minimal soreness
Very few if we look at all the studies and empirical evidence available.
A two year study has been conducted in which they followed participants taking 25mg of Ibutamoren a day. There was a transient cortisol increase that was still in range and normalized after a few weeks. No desensitization was observed, no shutdown of any hormone.
Ibutamoren helps you produce the same IGF-1 levels as if you were injecting 3iu rHGH without:
- Legal issues
- Running MK 677 for 2 months costs you 90 USD
- The equivalent injectable rHGH dose of 3iu per day costs you 1250 USD for 2 months.
Indeed, a kit of HGH, if you find a good deal, comes at USD 250 per 36iu. That’s 625 USD a month for pharmaceutical rHGH.
That is 14 times more expensive than MK 677 for the same result.
And finding real injectable rHGH is hard.
